Monthly Soundtrack : January

We’re kicking off 2018 with a bang here on the blog: we’ve got ourselves a guest (!!) Yes that’s right, after popping his songs into the playlists every month last year – and having to suffer whilst I played them on repeat (oops) – it was about time that Connor made his blog writing debut! We’ve spoken about this a couple of times and it was him that actually said that he wanted to appear on the blog more this year (which I am totally okay with) so what better what to get my lil music man involved than with our monthly soundtracks!
Don’t have a clue what I’m on about? Check out last January’s soundtrack here but without further ado, our first playlist of 2018!

“Now I’m not going to write a long ass spiel about every song that I’ve chosen, because quite frankly, I don’t want to bore and scare off half of Becca’s audience. So here’s my top picks of the top picks!

First up is the great new single from the lovely lads in Only Shadows – ‘Stay Close To Me.’ These guys have been blasting it with the singles over the past 6 months or so and they keep getting better. Perfect music for psyching yourself up for the day ahead. Also, they put on a cracking live show (just sayin’). I’m sure there’s plenty more to come of the great tracks we’ve already been hearing.

Neeeeext up is ‘You Do Nothing For Me’ from rockers Trampolene. And no that wasn’t a typo. Maybe Trampoline was copyrighted? Who knows? Anyway, the track comes from their debut album ‘Swansea to Hornsey’ which is just full of brow raising, foot tapping numbers and if you’re a fan of dirty bass tones, big choruses and guitars that’ll make your socks fall off and fly down the M3 – check them out.

Last but not least is ‘Ballad of Black and White’ by the always awesome Darlia. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys at Reading way back in 2014 and they just seem to get better and better. This track perfectly combines elements of rock, indie, rootsy fun. This song provides that breath of fresh air that everyone needs in a Spotify playlist. Needless to say, those reverby stick hits make you want to tap on whatever is around you and annoy any poor bastard in the surround area. Here’s to hoping that 2018 brings more amazing tracks, from Darlia, that everyone is patiently waiting for.”

Whilst I can’t promise as technical of a review of bubba over on the left there, this gal sure can provide the enthusiasm (that’s the former fangirl life for ya). So with that being said: THE GREATEST. SHOWMAN. SOUNDTRACK. I never knew I needed singing Zac Efron back in my life but now? Boy oh boy. Whilst I haven’t been lucky enough to see the film yet (I know, I know, it breaks my heart just as much too), I had to include a song from the soundtrack in here because it’s just incredible.

This month for me has also been one for new releases, one in particular being ‘Paradise’ by the wonderful George Ezra. Much like a singing Zac Efron, I didn’t realise just how much I need a new release from George; but there I was, dancing around my bedroom to the new video when it came out. There’s just something about this song that’s perfect for those mornings where the sun’s out, there’s a slight chill in the air and your soul is filled with the signs of Spring (I know you know that kinda days I’m on about don’t look at me silly).

I’m gonna take a leaf from Connor’s book and write about one more (because we all know I can ramble for days). Now I can’t say I expected there to be a cover of a Tina Turner song in one of these playlists, but here we are – and anyway, who doesn’t want the sweet tones of Joe Jonas serenading you? Despite being released in 2016 (boy am I late to this train) DNCE’s cover of ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ has only just come into my life. Now whilst George Ezra has me dreaming of the first days of spring and summer, this transports me to an 80s high-school prom (listen to it an tell me your mind doesn’t go there too) and I am totally okay with that.

And there we have it – season 2 of the monthlies has well and truly begun. Let me know what songs you’ve been loving over the past month are down below and as always, you can find this month’s playlist (as well as a whole host more) over on my Spotify!
